Hixon Forest, Bicentennial Trail

We grabbed the dog, the wine and cheese and our hiking shoes.  The only other thing we needed was a beautiful bluff and a sunset.  Check.  Hixon Forest is a 790-acre forest preserve with a bunch of trails to hike, bike and discover. We chose the Bicentennial Trail.  The Bicentennial is the longest trail, running from downtown La Crosse up the bluffs to a trailhead on County Highway FA. County FA, off Bliss Road, is also where the Human Powered Trails are so this area is dense with trails for biking, trail running, dog walking and cross-country skiing. My husband and I cheated this time and drove to the trail entrance on FA rather than hiking up the bluff.  Next time we do the whole trail. I'm all for doing what works though. At the end of a busy day, if we can get to a beautiful trail and an overlook within 20 or 30 minutes, then drive we will.

You only need sit still long enough in some attractive spot in the woods that all its inhabitants may exhibit themselves to you by turns.

At this point a hiker showed up that both of us recognized vaguely from our college days.  He was describing bird calls that he hears at various times of day on this bluff. Some people spend a lot of time on these trails.

He couldn't be any cuter, could he?

We are so lucky in La Crosse, WI to have all of these choices.  The Mississippi River out our front doors, Hixon Forest out our back door and the La Crosse River Marsh providing us with a wetland and a walking/biking trail all the way to downtown.
