I sat and read with my 6-year old stepson last night. It's an amazing thing to watch someone learn to read. I listen to him sounding out the consonants and verbs. Deciding when to step in and when to let him decipher on his own. He is learning so fast. When I first got to know him, he didn't know a word and now, just a couple of short years later, he's whizzing through two-syllable words in many cases. Watching these milestones with a child, even if he isn't my own, is like watching flowers grow and the sun set and the moon rise and babies being born...the world keeps on moving forward and when I stop and take notice I see what a magnificent world we have.
